doubt和suspect的区别（doubt的用法）

作动词时，因为都有”怀疑“的意思，doubt 和 suspect 才有机会相聚，但实际上它们是不同性质的怀疑，因为有的时候你可能会怀疑事情不是真的，有的时候你又可能怀疑事情是真的，那么怎么合理使用 doubt 和 suspect 呢？

一、doubt

作动词时，doubt 的英文解释是：to feel uncertain about sth; to feel that sth is not true, will probably not happen, etc.

由此可见，doubt 表示的是一种不确定性，指不确定或不相信某事的真实性，意为“怀疑，不确定”，不用进行时，例如：

I doubt whether I can finish the work on time.

我怀疑我是否能按时完成这项工作。

They had begun to doubt that it could be done.

他们开始怀疑这件事是否能办到。

She began to doubt everything he said.

她开始怀疑他所说的一切。

二、suspect

作动词时，suspect 的英语解释是：to have an idea that sth is probably true or likely to happen, especially sth bad, but without having definite proof

由此可见，suspect 指的是有疑问，觉得某事有发生的可能性，尤其是坏的事情，意为“猜想，怀疑”，不用进行时，例如：

I suspect he cheats the taxman.

我怀疑他欺骗了税务人员。

I don't really know how she got the job, but I suspect her mother's got contacts.

我真的不知道她是怎么得到这份工作的，但我怀疑她母亲有熟人。

We suspect he means to dishonour the agreement made three years ago.

我们怀疑他打算不履行三年前达成的协议。

三、两者的区别

1. 当怀疑事情时，doubt 表示觉得或怀疑某事不是真的，而 suspect 表示觉得某事是真的，而且事情通常是坏的或消极的，因此在描述上两者的方向是不同的，而且有点相反的感觉，例如：

A: Why are you late for work?

你为什么上班迟到？

B: Oh, I had to help my grandmother, she wanted me to carry some heavy luggage.

啊，我得帮我祖母，她要我带一些沉重的行李。

A: Your grandmother needed to move luggage before 8 AM? I doubt that.

你祖母需要在上午8点之前搬动行李吗？我对此表示怀疑。

解析：这里的 doubt 表示我觉得“要在上午8点之前搬动行李”不是真的。

A: Why was he late to work?

他为什么上班迟到？

B: I suspect he was out late again and overslept.

我怀疑他又在外面呆很久，睡过头了。

解析：这里的 suspect 表示觉得“他在外面呆很久，睡过头”是真的，而鬼混或睡懒觉都是消极的事情。

2. 当不相信某人的清白时，用 doubt，简单地讲就是“怀疑别人是清白的或无辜的”，而当相信别人的罪责时，用 suspect，简单地讲就是“相信别人是有罪责的或者他们应该感到内疚的”等，这个也可以从作名词的 suspect 看出来，而作名词的 doubt 没有这个意思。

Suspect 作名词时，意为“犯罪嫌疑人，嫌疑犯”等，也就是一个被怀疑有罪行的人，例如：

He is the prime suspect in the case.

他是这个案子的首要嫌疑人。

After the robbery, the usual suspects were rounded up.

抢劫案发生后，经常作案的嫌疑犯被围捕起来。

3. Suspect 可以作形容词，意为“可疑的，不可信的，靠不住的”等，通常用来形容物，而 doubt 不可以作名词，例如：

I can’t understand why my reasons seem suspect to a number of people.

我不明白为什么我的理由在很多人看来是可疑的。
